Meeting the Family

October 25th, 2006 - 2 Responses

This past weekend Simon met one of his great grandmothers. He is fortunate to have two great grandmothers who adore him. He was very well behaved while visiting with Granna except that he hardly opened his eyes for her. He will have to go back soon when he has more energy. He did a lot of travelling this weekend so we’ve decided to give him a week of quiet time at home.

Simon has also learned to enjoy the bath.

Simon will be two weeks old tomorrow and he has already outgrown all his newborn clothes. They’re supposed to fit babies until they are one month old or 10 pounds and at our last appointment with our midwife he was already 10 pounds 5 ounces. He gained 13 ounces in five days!

Simon is sleeping with us for now - mostly to make my life easier since he’s breastfeeding so frequently. He loves to sleep on one of Christopher’s thin foam pillows.

Both sets of grandparents are trying to pick their names. Janet seems to have settled on Gramma and my mom is trying to pick between Grammy and Nana. My mom picked Granddad for my father, but his theory is that Simon will call him whatever he wants and I’m sure he’s right. Ross is still working through his list.

We took Simon to Chudleigh’s apple farm on Saturday. We picked the cutest pumpkin from the patch to take home.

New Experiences

Today Simon enjoyed a long walk in his stroller. He is very patient and seems to enjoy it even when his dad takes the corners and rough bits a little too fast. He is also happy to spend time in his vibrating rocker while exploring the world with his eyes.

Our midwife said that Simon is an overachiever because of his quick weight gain, but I think his dancing is more impressive.

The hitchhikers thumb lives on

We recently discovered that Simon has double jointed thumbs - just like Grammy Lisa and Uncle Neil. It’s so neat to see family traits passed on to our brand new baby.

Overdue babies often have dry skin, so our midwives suggested we rub some oil on Simon. I’ve given him two massages so far and he seems to enjoy them. He stretches and yawns and makes all kinds of funny faces while being massaged. This is his “I’m a tough body builder” face.

Our lovely friend Sarah knit this bunny hat for Simon. We’re going to put it on him for Halloween while we hand out candy.

Simon has more that just his dad’s nose, he also has his calm, peaceful disposition.  I’ve heard many stories about what a great baby Christopher was and Simon appears to take after him. We are so lucky to have such an easy baby.  He only wakes up once a night so we’re not nearly as sleep deprived as I thought we would be.  Most of the time he’s either sleeping, eating or quietly looking around.

There are only a few things that can get him really screaming - being naked and having a bath.

Simon is quickly becoming more interested in what he can see. He is fascinated with the ceiling when rocking in my arms but is definitely most interested in our faces.
